In your role as the Senior Category Manager - Food, at The North West Company (NWC), you will grow market share, sales, and gross profit in Northern Canada Retail (NCR) and Giant Tiger stores for the assigned food categories. You will also work with a team of Category Managers and associates in building market-specific strategies that take advantage of business opportunities, drive effective selling and marketing events. Your Role:

  • Create and execute effective, detailed semi and annual category business plans which will  include  financial  performance  goals  of sales, gross profit, inventory productivity, and operating margins;
  • Gather and analyze consumer data, market information, and industry trends for formulation of strategies;
  • Meet budget timelines for review and planning;
  • Complete assortment and margin reviews inclusive of pricing strategies ensuring market competitiveness and gross profit budgets are met and exceeded;
  • Negotiate and source products, prices, and agreements on behalf of NWC, while maintaining strong vendor relationships;
  • Work collaboratively with NWC Sales and Operations and Supply Chain to ensure category planning and market programs are executed and operating effectively at store level;
  • Provide direction and development for assigned team members inclusive of day to day operations, problem solving and category management disciplines;
  • Learn all aspects of systems and reporting tools required to perform job duties;
  • Ensure subordinates receive necessary training on systems and reporting tools to properly perform their job duties; and
  • Responsible for supervising the department(s) Category Manager and Assistant Category Manager.

Job Requirements

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school;
  • Minimum 10 years related category management experience;
  • Demonstrated leadership combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • P & L accountability and budgeting experience;
  • Direct accountability for category management including buying and retail merchandising strategies;
  • Strong analytical acumen for generating and evaluating forecasts, financial and operating metrics;
  • Ability to operate computer systems proficiently, specifically Microsoft Office Suite and Excel;
  • Commitment to conduct business according to NWC business standards;
  • Proven commitment to excellent customer and vendor relations;
  • A high degree of accuracy with details and numbers;
  • Proven organizational, planning and prioritizing skills; and
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and assignments.
