In your role as a Manager, Design at The North West Company (NWC); you will develop design proposals relating to the stores internal and external concepts that maintain NWC company standards by incorporating current trends in retail design to enhance market opportunities for all NWC banners. You will also collaborate with the construction team to create interior architectural design drawings for the construction and/or renovation of retail store properties. Your Role:

  • Create standards for layouts and building designs for stores and dwellings to ensure facilities optimize productivity, minimize capital, operating and maintenance costs, enhance the customers shopping experience and comply with all applicable building codes;
  • Development of NWC business units’ brand images working with architectural and interior design contractors or in-house staff to create the design, selection, and recommendations of permanent signage, fixturing, equipment, materials and finishes;
  • Research, recommend, and create fixtures, equipment, and finishing materials standards to maximize lifecycles, and minimize capital, maintenance, operating and utility costs;
  • Create corporate standards for AutoCAD drawings production and specifications to communicate NWC business units’ building and construction standards to developers, architectural and engineering consultants and contractors;
  • Work with Operations and Procurement & Marketing to assess and document business needs of new facilities, major renovations and remodels;
  • Analyze compatibility and efficiency of equipment in various markets and establish décor, fixture and equipment budgets for new stores and store renovations / remodel, and negotiate competitive pricing with suppliers;
  • Support engineering personnel in the preparation and carrying out of original designs adaptations changes, necessitated by inadequate tolerances, general facility problems, and/or customer requirements;
  • Ability to adapt and prioritize plans to address resource and operational challenges, and apply a methodical decision-making process based on policies and senior management guidance; and
  • Manage purchasing and design team to procure fixtures and equipment and the design and layout of stores.

Job Requirements

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Must possess 8 years of experience in retail design & construction projects. Experience in supermarket design/construction is an asset;
  • A Bachelor of Interior Design or a Bachelor of Environmental Design or equivalent is preferred. Masters of Interior Design is an asset;
  • Minimum 5 years of utilizing AutoCAD and interpretation of CAD drawings;
  • Working knowledge of building codes, standard construction practices, and materials is a must;
  • Must have proven experience maintaining and managing budgets effectively and accurately;
  • Experience in procurement and negotiations;
  • Previous leadership/people management experience is required;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office with a focus on Microsoft Excel and project applications;
  • Experience in OfficeTrax would be an asset;
  • Ability to manage  multiple  projects  while  adhering  to  strict deadlines and budgets;
  • Must be highly motivated with proven organizational, planning and prioritizing skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels within the organization and
  • Ability to travel in Canada, the United States and International.
