In your role as the Category Management Specialist at The North West Company (NWC); you support and liaise with the Procurement & Marketing (P&M) and Merchandise Performance Services (MPS) teams to develop defined category strategies to optimize sales and profit opportunities. You will advocate for category management as a value-added service in support of go-to-market business decisions, and identify data analyses and reporting requirements to support Category Management initiatives. Your Role:

  • Work with stakeholders to assist in the development of category plans that align with the overall banner and line of business strategies;
  • Support the deployment of category strategy implementation activities;
  • Lead all category management efforts in supporting key business initiatives;
  • Support the continuous development of a category management training program which ensures consistent and improved level of competency year over year;
  • Identify, develop and implement the right tools, metrics and reporting needed to monitor performance and optimize category management practices;
  • Demonstrate leadership in knowledge of industry trends, category, consumer and competitive insights. Share with key stakeholders to help direct business development opportunities;
  • Monitor strategy success against the metrics and drive course correction if needed;
  • Make objective recommendations on assortment opportunities, shelf allocations, pricing and promotion tactics;
  • Negotiate and manage 3rd party service providers relationships (e.g. CMKG for Catman Training, Daisy Intel for Promotion Planning);
  • Revise current Catman processes and SOPs; develop new processes and SOPs;
  • Mine data and deliver insights to support top Initiatives and top categories; and
  • Prepare presentations to support the communication of key Catman activities and achievements to senior management.

Job Requirements

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Undergraduate / Bachelor degree with a Marketing focus;
  • 3-5 years of category management experience, preferably in the CPG sector;
  • Advanced knowledge of category management processes and practices;
  • Ability and experience coaching Category Management disciplines and practices;
  • Proven ability to connect programs and business challenges to category management analytics and insights;
  • Strong in data analytics, and experience working with BI tools;
  • Skilled in change management and change adoption;
  • Ability to work independently; energetic and self-motivated;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel; and
  • Proactive mindset that challenges the status quo, makes recommendations for improvement and executes those recommendations.
