Job Description

As the Business Development Manager, at The North West Company (NWC), you provide research, analysis and advice related to the creation of both short range and medium-range general merchandise business strategies with a particular focus on E-commerce. You will bridge the operating scope and horizon of Category Managers and that of the Vice-President, General Merchandise, Procurement & Marketing (“GM, P&M”). This role will facilitate business strategies that provide NWC the opportunity to better serve its customers with products and services in the area of general merchandise and create a clear competitive advantage to both local and distant competitors.

Your Role:

  • Assess profit potential on assigned merchandise categories or businesses;
  • Complete or coordinate relevant research on assigned categories, including vendor, industry, and consumer;
  • Lead and Manage more complex, medium and longer range business plans, from pilot and measurement phases through execution;
  • Represent Vice-Presidents or GM Category Managers, on setting best practices across Procurement & Marketing;
  • Work on store, banner-specific or GM-related special projects;
  • Build consensus and understanding throughout the organization on GM best practices and initiatives;
  • Present on projects and initiatives to senior management.

Job Requirements

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Business degree or equivalent required, MBA is considered an asset;
  • Five years or more of relevant work experience;
  • Experience in E-commerce development and execution is required;
  • Work experience within Project Management field is considered an asset;
  • Experience working with executive level projects and people;
  • Exceptional planning and analysis (market research, statistical, management accounting and financial) skill set;
  • Category management, marketing or merchandising experience is required;
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and capitalize on business opportunities and to create or play a key role in creating plans that are effectively executed;
  • Demonstrated interest & insight into retail industry and consumer.
  • Travel as required.
